"Ultima lotta di Pompei
I was sitting at home recently thinking about the trip to Rome that M (my partner) had promised to me. It has been a wish and a dream of mine since childhood to visit the Roman ruins and to see the beautiful paintings of Michelangelo, in particular that iconic image of the Hand of God giving life to Adam, when this memory from a distant past in my childhood crossed my mind; God giveth and God taketh away. I remember this being told to me when I was very young and it got me thinking about earlier times in Italian history where this happened, but on a scale that must have seemed that everything, every possession and every person in one way or another was affected. The eruption of Pompeii has to be the most prolific of all?
Without very much warning the sleeping volcano erupted, indiscriminately spewing its lava of death to everyone, devastating an entire city in one brief moment. Entire families were literally annihilated leaving only an imprint as a reminder of their existences in stone. How terrifying that must have been to watch this companion of a mountain that had stood solidly in its place next to their everyday lives as a friendly neighbour from time immemorial, in one horrifying moment become their worst nightmare. I could not begin to comprehend the panic, fright and terror that must have gone through everyones minds as they stood and watched this magnificent eruption race towards them, leaving them nowhere to run, nowhere to hide and nowhere to find sanctuary from the destruction that it would cause in its path. I hope that my painting gives some credibility and a sensation of how that moment must have felt? To see something so spectacular and beautiful happening, yet causing so much misery and pain to so many?" Sarah-Jane
